Pizza Braid

Saturday, September 12, 2009

Other wise known as calzone, my three year old devours his "pizza braid". I had a headache all day yesterday and thought easy was the way to go.... Unfortunately, my warm water ended up being HOT water, causing my yeast to cook rather than dissolve, so my bread never rose. Not a big deal, still tasted good, but the pictures are pretty lame. Hopefully you still get the idea.

WHAT YOU NEED:
FOR THE DOUGH
1/2 warm water
1 pkg active dry yeast
1 tsp sugar
1/2 c warm milk
1 TBSP oil- i use olive
1 glove garlic, minced- or a couple shakes of garlic powder
1 tsp salt
2 1/2 C flour
corn meal
FOR THE FILLING
Pizza sauce
Mozzarella cheese
pizza toppings

WHAT TO DO
Combine warm water and yeast in medium bowl. Stir with for until yeast has disolved.Add sugar, warm milk, oil, salt. Stir. Add flour, mix until dough. Add more flour or water as needed. Grease cookie sheet. Sprinkle some corn meal on it and bang the cookie sheet so that the whole thing has a light coating of corn meal. Put your dough directly onto cookie sheet. Roll into a large oval shape. Mine usually ends up a bit more rectangle. That works too. Put some pizza sauce in the middle- not all the way to the edges, just in the center, remember you have to braid it still- now add some cheese to the middle, and your toppings. Repeat.

Cut edges in one inch increments. Braid the dough around the filling. Bake in preheated 350 oven for about 30 to 40 minutes or until bread is golden brown. I usually brush the top with half and have a couple times to keep the top from drying out as it cooks.
